Sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy
The sciatic nerve is
the largest nerve in the body, providing sensory and motor function to the
lower extremities. This nerve provides sensation to the back of the thigh,
lower leg, and sole of the foot.
Sciatic nerve pain is
intermittent severe pain that occurs in the legs.
What causes sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy?
The sciatic nerve
runs under the uterus to the legs. The cause of sciatic nerve pain is thought
to be due to pressure on the nerve caused by the developing baby.
What can I do to cure this?
The simplest remedy
is to lie on your side, away from the pain. This can help relieve pressure on
the nerve. Avoid heavy lifting and avoid prolonged standing.
If you feel pressure
while standing, try lifting one leg and resting it on something. Swimming can
also reduce discomfort.
You can feel relief
by applying heat or cold to the problem area. Your doctor may recommend
acetaminophen for pain relief.
It is important to see a doctor if the pain becomes constant or increases in intensity or frequency.
