Why you can't spoil a baby

Month 10, week 2

Research shows that babies whose needs are met quickly in infancy actually become more confident and less whiny during childhood.

So if your mom or best friend tells you that you are spoiling your child by taking him, be sure that you are doing everything in your power for him.

  • Work with them to help them learn to calm down with a blanket or other favorite item.
  • Rock in the rocking chair for a while and then encourage them to play on their own.
  • Even if you're used to picking up your baby quickly when he cries, if you're frustrated and upset, you can take a break for a few minutes while he's in the crib or somewhere safe. A calmer parent means a calmer child.
  • Remember: Babies this age don't remember rules. Therefore, you will have to repeat yourself often and try to stick to the routine in the coming months.
  • Babies can still be wary of strangers or new surroundings, so expect plenty of reassurance that everything is okay.

Your baby's development this week

These days your little one is busy testing you by trying new behaviors to see what your reaction will be.

They are not "bad". They try to understand what the limits of their world are, and they learn by exploring and interacting with that world.

Instead of getting frustrated, use this to get things done:

  • Don't expect a 10-month-old to resist temptation. Instead, keep tempting but forbidden items out of reach and offer them safe places to explore, like a kitchen cabinet with plastic spoons, cups, and bowls.
  • Try not to say no all the time. Instead, drive them away from the radiator with "Hot!" and dramatic face.
  • When they take your cup of coffee, say "Mom's cup", then give them your cup and say "Olivia's cup!"
  • Focus on what you want them to do rather than the no-nos.

10th month, 2nd week tips

  • Teach your child's caregivers the words your child uses for important things like a blanket or a bottle. Do they sign? Make sure they know it.
  • Stick to your regular sleep schedule. Knowing that they are going to give them a bath, then their pajamas, then their story and their song helps them understand their world and builds their confidence.
  • Use routines and games to make everyday activities like going to the store interesting and fun for your little one.
  • Flying with a child? You can bring more than 85 grams of formula, breast milk or juice to security if you report it to security and present it for inspection.
  • In order to pass security checks at the airport, you will need to remove your child from the stroller or carrier.
  • If your child has had an ear infection or ear surgery in the last two weeks, talk to your doctor before flying.
