Glass or plastic baby bottles
Decades ago, the only baby bottles available to parents were glass. But
the glass was heavy and brittle. So, when lighter and more unbreakable plastic
bottles appeared, the glass bottle was practically obsolete.
However, recent reports that plastic found in baby bottles can cause
potentially harmful developmental changes in babies have left parents wondering
if old-fashioned glass might be such a bad thing.
Which is better, glass or plastic? Here is some information about baby
bottles, as well as tips on how to choose bottles safely and effectively.
Baby bottle problems
The problem with glass bottles is pretty obvious. Glass is also heavy
and bulky. On the other hand, glass bottles are durable and contain no
chemicals that could get into infant formula.
Plastic bottles are light, strong and unbreakable. There have been
concerns that a chemical in polycarbonate plastic could lead to certain types
of cancer, changes in the brain and reproductive system, and early puberty.
Baby bottle selection
There are basically three types of bottles: plastic, plastic with a
disposable liner, and glass.
Disposable bottle liners are also generally BPA-free (look for the words
"BPA-free" on the label). However, they tend to be more expensive than
bottles as they have to be changed after every feeding.
If you want to try glass bottles but are afraid they might break, some
companies make silicone sleeves to protect the bottle.
Baby bottle care
Here are some tips for caring for a baby bottle:
- Never store breast milk or formula in plastic bottles. Pour it into the bottle just before your child is ready to eat. Throw away whatever is left.
- Do not use hot water or harsh
cleaners on polycarbonate bottles, as this can also speed up the decomposition of
the plastic. Instead, use a mild
detergent and warm water.
- Replace any cracked or chipped glass bottles.
