Car seat features
You will not be able to pick
up your baby from the hospital without a car seat securely secured in the back
seat. Before you embark on your confusing journey through the car seat
departments of your local super center for kids, here are a few things to keep
in mind:
- A new car seat is always better. This is a children's thing that needs to be chosen very carefully.
- If you choose a used car seat, check it carefully to make sure it hasn't been recalled and has no cracks or broken parts. Never use a car seat that has been used in an accident.
- Start in a rear-facing seat and stay in it until your child is 2 years old or until they are over the height and weight recommended for the seat. Their legs may look flattened, but they are still safer and more comfortable in this position.
- Look for 5-point harnesses to help keep your child snug.
- Belts with buckles must always be securely fastened. Loose seat belts do not adequately protect your child.
- Be sure to adjust the chest clip to the level of your child's armpits.
- Each car seat has an expiration date. Usually it is 6 years from the date of manufacture. If you cannot find an expiration date, call the manufacturer.
- Buy a car seat that fits your stroller perfectly. This will save you valuable travel time.
- The car seat should be light enough to be easily transported. If it's heavy right now, imagine what it would be like with a baby inside!
If you need help installing your car seat, call a professional! Go to your local fire department and they will do it right. You can also refer to your car's owner's manual or ask your pediatrician for help. There are several approved pediatric applications for ease of choice and safety.
