Baby carrier features

Babies may look tiny, but they can get quite heavy after being carried around all day! One way to keep your baby close without straining your back is to use a baby carrier. Carriers support your baby, keep your hands free and provide more mobility than a bulky stroller.

Don't know which carrier to buy?

Try each operator before you buy. Features to look for:

  • Good back support for you
  • The leg holes are small enough so that the child does not slip through them
  • Soft headrest to support newborn's swaying head and neck.
  • Durable materials and durable washable straps
  • Front carriers are best for heavy babies and mums/dads with back problems.
  • Slings make breastfeeding easier, but they don't have a harness. If you are using a sling, make sure the baby is facing outwards and not slipping.
  • Do not use a backpack type carrier until your child is 1 year old.
  • If you're buying a used baby carrier, make sure it hasn't been recalled. Also carefully inspect it, including the frame, clasps, buckles and straps.
  • Even if your carrier has not been recalled, carefully check the condition of the carrier. Worn out or old baby carriers can be dangerous for babies of all sizes.
  • Most carrier manufacturers include weight recommendations, baby orientation instructions, and information on how long their products can be worn. Be sure to follow these guidelines to keep your child safe.
  • You can also talk to your pediatrician to help you decide on the safety of the products you want to use for your child.
